Overview
Glacier Encounter is our classic short tour and the perfect introduction to glaciers in Vatnajökull National park. In this 3 hour tour we explore the icy landscape of the outlet glacier Falljökull. By driving to the glacier on our super jeeps, we reserve our energy and add time for enjoyment up on the beautiful glacier. We carbon offset all of our tours as we believe it to be our responsibility as a glacier guiding company.
Once we reach the edge of the glacier we put on our crampons, and armed with an ice axe, we venture onto the ice to explore the fascinating ice features such as moulins, crevasses, moraines and dirt cones. Your guide will tell you about the local Öræfi region, home to the highest peak of Iceland and several volcanoes.
The glacier surface and colours change drastically depending on the time of the year. Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the views of the high mountain peaks and black sand beaches stretching out into the ocean in the distance.
Additional Information
It is important to dress appropriately for the weather so that you will be as comfortable as possible on your trip. Please wear warm layers, a waterproof jacket and outdoor trousers or leggings avoiding jeans where possible. We also strongly suggest that you have a hat, scarf and gloves as it can get windy and you will also protect your hands from the ice which can be both cold and sharp.
During all of our glacier tours we expect our clients to have sturdy hiking shoes. We highly advise you to have shoes with ankle support and good grip as we believe these types of footwear will make you feel comfortable at any point of our glacier adventure.
In case you don’t have the right shoes please speak to our guides on location before the tour starts and we will be able to advise you. We have good quality glacier boots available for rent.
